2027 ACA Open Enrollment: November 1 – January 15

May 1, 2026

The annual ACA Open Enrollment Period for 2027 coverage runs November 1, 2026 through January 15, 2027. Enroll by December 15 for January 1 coverage; enroll by January 15 for February 1 coverage. Outside this window, enrollment requires a qualifying life event (Special Enrollment Period).

What to do

Full-timers who go full-time mid-year may qualify for an SEP (losing employer coverage is a qualifying event). If you miss OEP, you're locked out until November unless an SEP is triggered.

Medicare Annual Enrollment: October 15 – December 7

May 1, 2026

What to do

Full-timers currently on Medicare Advantage should use this window to evaluate switching to Original Medicare + Medigap Plan G — the nationally-portable option recommended for travelers.

Law & Policy Changes

ACA Subsidy Cliff Returned January 1, 2026

May 1, 2026

The enhanced premium subsidies from the 2021 American Rescue Plan expired on January 1, 2026. Households above 400% of the Federal Poverty Level ($60,240 single / $124,800 family of four) no longer qualify for Premium Tax Credits. Full-timers above this threshold are seeing significantly higher unsubsidized premiums this year.

Impact for full-timers

Working-age full-timers above the subsidy cliff should compare unsubsidized ACA premiums against health sharing plans and the new 2026 HSA+Bronze stack.

All ACA Bronze Plans Now HSA-Eligible (One Big Beautiful Bill Act)

May 1, 2026

Effective January 1, 2026, the One Big Beautiful Bill Act made all ACA Bronze plans HSA-compatible. Direct Primary Care memberships up to $150/month per person are also now explicitly HSA-qualified. This creates a new coverage stack — Bronze ACA plan + HSA + virtual DPC — not previously permitted.

Impact for full-timers

Self-employed full-timers who are healthy and above the subsidy cliff now have a new tax-advantaged option. HSA contribution limits in 2026: $4,400 individual, $8,750 family.

Medicare Part D Out-of-Pocket Cap Now $2,000/Year

May 1, 2026

The 2025 Medicare Prescription Drug Inflation Reduction Act redesign took full effect in 2026. The maximum out-of-pocket cost for Part D prescription drug coverage is now capped at $2,000 per year — a significant improvement for Medicare enrollees on expensive medications.

Impact for full-timers

Medicare retirees on costly brand-name medications should re-evaluate their Part D plan selection using Medicare Plan Finder. Use the $2,000 cap as a ceiling when comparing plans.

VA Community Care Network Contracts Under Transition in 2026

May 1, 2026

The VA issued a new RFP in late 2025 for Community Care Network contracts that expire in 2026. No eligibility changes are expected, but some veterans may experience network disruptions as new contractors are phased in. The VA recommends calling ahead to verify provider CCN status before scheduling appointments.

Impact for full-timers

Veteran full-timers using Community Care should verify their provider's current CCN status before appointments, particularly for specialist care. Call your VA facility or the CCN contractor line.
